We tried the legendary $140 cheesesteak at Barclay Prime in Philadelphia and we’ll tell you all about it as we answer the question everyone asks… “was it worth it?” (video below).
Barclay Prime is an upscale steakhouse located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It’s known for its luxurious dining experience and, notably, for its very expensive and gourmet take on the classic Philly cheesesteak. The cheesesteak consists of “luxurious ingredients” and hefty price tag, earning it the reputation as one of the most, if not the most, expensive cheesesteaks in the world. Here’s what our very own
Mr. MoCo
, who along with a small group, tried
18 cheesesteaks in three days
in Philly:
Let me start by saying that a group of four of us ordered this cheesesteak, which comes out to about $35 each.
Barclay Prime, located in Philly, elevates the classic cheesesteak by using high-grade Wagyu beef, often A5, which is incredibly tender and flavorful. The beef is infused/topped with roasted foie gras, adding a rich, buttery decadence. Freshly shaved black truffles are generously applied, and the cheesesteak features Cooper Sharp cheese, a favorite among cheesesteak aficionados. All of it is placed inside of a freshly baked sesame roll and it comes with a half bottle of champagne included in the price.
So, was it worth it?
The cheesesteak is undeniably delicious, made with high-quality ingredients and packed with flavor. The experience was memorable, and I don’t think I could have even finished it on my own. I thought it was a fantastic cheesesteak, ranking #2 out of the 18 we tried in Philly, but the hefty price tag makes it inaccessible for many. My #1 cheesesteak in Philly was from Woodrow’s sandwich shop, and Angelo’s came in at #3.
While I enjoyed the experience and sharing it with a group of four, I wouldn’t purchase one for myself at that price. Justifying $140 for a cheesesteak is difficult, so my answer would likely be: no, it’s probably not “worth it.” However, I’m glad I tried it, and it tasted great.
