Watkins Mill Alumnus Davon Moody Performs at Tony Awards

Davon T. Moody

, a 2012 graduate of Watkins Mill High School in Montgomery Village, MD, made his Broadway debut earlier this year as Young Compay in Buena Vista Social Club. Last night, he performed at the Tony Awards.


Buena Vista Social Club, which was co-produced by

Montgomery County native Doug Fellman

won four awards out of a total 10 nominations as well as a special award. The musical brings the Grammy-winning 1997 album to life, telling the story of the musicians who were part of it, with the plot alternating between the 1950s and the 1990s. Moody’s character, Young Compay, is one of the central figures whose younger life is explored in the narrative, alongside young versions of Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo.

Moody’s theatrical experience also includes a national tour in MJ the Musical where he played Alejandro, and an Off-Broadway appearance in Man of No Importance. Moody has an extensive list of regional theater credits, with roles such as Dallas Winston in The Outsiders at La Jolla Playhouse, Benny in RENT at the Signature Theatre, and Simeon in the world premiere of A.D. 16 here in Montgomery County at Olney Theatre.

He has also performed at Ford’s Theatre in productions like The Wiz and Amazing Grace, and at ArtsCentric in Hair and Dreamgirls and revious roles at Montgomery College: In the Heights (Graffiti Pete) and Conference of the Birds (The Falcon), and Jake in Side Show.
