Washington Post’s “Best Gyro” Spot to Host Gyro-Eating Contest on September 6th

Our very own Mr. MoCo will host the 2nd Annual Big Greek Gyro Eating Contest, which is scheduled to return on Saturday, September 6th, 2025, at 5 p.m. at the Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Festival (721 Norwood Rd.) in Cloverly/Silver Spring.

What started out as a single family-run restaurant in Silver Spring in 2009 has expanded to 14 locations throughout Maryland and Virginia, and the Washington Post just awarded it the Best Gyroby in the DC metro region. The contest this year honors the company’s ongoing expansion and the community that helped make it happen. Gyro aficionados from all over the DMV are invited to compete in this exciting, crowd-pleasing exhibition.

According to Nikos Marmaras, co-founder of The Big Greek Caf, this event is our way of giving back to the communities and our devoted patrons who have helped us over the past 15 years. We can’t wait to celebrate with delicious food, good times, and a little healthy competition back where it all began. The competition will include:

The winner will get a $1,000 cash prize.

The Big Greek Champion Belt in official use

Present boxes worth more than $150 for each competitor

The event will be held during the Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Festival, which is well-known for its live music, traditional dance performances, authentic Greek cuisine, and joyous sense of community. The contest is currently open at www.BigGreekCafe.com, and entries are restricted. In addition to enjoying the sights, sounds, and flavors of the festival, spectators are invited to arrive hungry and support their favorite competitors.
