The Washington Commanders have announced they they will be retiring legendary wide receiver Art Monk’s jersey on Thursday, November 20th against the Seattle Seahawks.

Art Monk’s NFL career was largely defined by his outstanding 14 seasons with the Washington Redskins (1980-1993), where he established himself as one of the premier wide receivers of his era. Drafted in the first round in 1980, Monk made an immediate impact, earning unanimous All-Rookie honors with 58 receptions, a Redskins rookie record. He was a pillar of consistency and durability, becoming a key component of the Redskins teams that won three Super Bowls (XVII, XXII, and XXVI).

Monk was renowned for his reliable hands and ability to make tough catches across the middle, and his quiet determination helped set the tone for the Redskins’ offensive success. He achieved numerous milestones, including three consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 1984 to 1986. Monk’s peak came in 1984 when he set a then-NFL record with 106 receptions for a career-best 1,372 yards. He followed that with two more 1,000-yard seasons, becoming the first Redskins receiver to achieve three consecutive 1,000-yard receiving campaigns.

In 1992, he made history by becoming the NFL’s all-time leading receiver with his 820th career catch, eventually becoming the first player to eclipse 900 receptions. He also held an NFL record with a streak of 183 consecutive games with a reception. By the end of his tenure with the Redskins, Monk held numerous franchise records, including career receptions (888), receiving yards (12,026), and total yards from scrimmage (13,053). His remarkable contributions were recognized with his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest Redskins players of all time.

The Washington Commanders shared the following on social media:
