Update: House Fire in Kensington/Silver Spring Displaces Two Adults and a Pet, Causes Significant Damage

Two adults and their pet were forced to relocate after a house fire in Kensington/Silver Spring caused extensive damage on Sunday night. In response to the incident, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) moved quickly.

Assistant Chief David Pazos posted on social media that there was a fire at 10124 Meadowneck Court, which is in the Kensington neighborhood and has an address in Silver Spring. There were reports of a lot of black smoke coming from the house. According to the fire officials’ preliminary assessments, the fire started in the garage while the homeowner was trying to put out the flames before they arrived.

By 8:55 p.m., MCFRS had established that the fire had spread to the second floor of the house and was caused by a hybrid vehicle in the garage. Thankfully, the residents and their pets were able to leave without incident. Although one adult resident was assessed on the spot for trying to extinguish the fire prior to the fire department’s arrival, they were not sent for additional medical attention. Shortly after, it was reported that the fire was under control.

Pete Piringer, the chief spokesperson for the MCFRS, gave more information on Monday morning and stated that the fire was accidental. A charcoal igniting bag that had been abused and surrounding combustibles, such as a wood chip fire starter, in the adjoining garage were the causes of the fire. Including the loss of the car, the estimated damage from the fire is around $350,000.
