On Monday around 12:45 p.m., Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services (MCFRS)

responded to a kitchen fire

on the third floor of a building located in the 18000 block of Cottage Garden Drive in Germantown.

The fire occurred in a residential apartment, and the incident was initially reported when smoke alarms from a neighboring unoccupied apartment alerted residents, prompting the leasing office to call 911. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS, Pete Piringer, the fire was brought under control with no injuries reported.

In a subsequent update at 7:03 p.m., Piringer stated that the fire originated in the kitchen area, specifically in the void space above the stove. The cause was attributed to a defective hood vent system and electrical wiring to an appliance. Damage from the fire was estimated at $300,000, and a total of 26 adults and 6 children were displaced by the incident.
