Due to problems with Montgomery County Public Schools’ (MCPS) new payment mechanism, MCPS Hub+, the Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA) has expressed serious concern about disruptions to instructor compensation. In response to persistent issues, the most recent of which has prevented certain employees from receiving timely compensation, the union has filed a class action grievance against the school system.
According to MCEA Vice President Danillya Wilson, “like all workers, our members depend on getting paid on time and in full.” These interruptions are not acceptable. Our members’ capacity to meet their financial duties to their families and pay their bills on time is disrupted by these payment issues.
According to MCEA President David Stein, problems with the Hub+ platform have existed since the start of the previous academic year. Stein claimed that even though MCPS promised MCEA that the paychecks would be sent on Wednesday, the problems have persisted since MCPS launched the platform during the previous academic year, and we have repeatedly brought this issue to MCPS’s attention. The latest problem is the worst: nobody should have to deal with not getting paid on time or in whole.
MCEA has formally escalated the issue in response to these ongoing payment difficulties. President Stein affirmed that MCEA has brought a class action complaint against MCPS under our collective bargaining agreement in response to these continuous payment issues. We’re ready to do whatever it takes to ensure that our members and their families are restored to wholeness.
In a statement given to us, MCPS Public Information Officer Liliana Lopez recognized the challenges, noting that this past pay period, several team members on summer assignments had pay disruptions due to problems with our new payroll and HR system.
Lopez explained the extent of the most recent delay: a few summer workers who began working after July 11 or whose time sheets were entered into our system after July 11 will now receive their payments by July 30. On July 25, the remaining staff members were paid on time.
MCPS apologized for the effects of these problems. Lopez stated that MCPS deeply apologizes for any inconvenience this delay may have caused, both financially and personally. In order to give our team members the assurance that they will continue to receive accurate and timely compensation, MCPS is dedicated to collaborating with our associations.
