As Takumi Japanese Bistro and Bar gets ready to open at 4929 Bethesda Avenue, downtown Bethesda will receive a new culinary element. The new restaurant will be located in the cherished Shanghai Village, which was home to Wang Dynasty and, for 15 years prior, had a strong tradition of Asian-inspired cuisine.
The successful opening at Columbia Mall last year was followed by the expansion into Montgomery County. Building on the success of its Columbia location, the new Bethesda facility will introduce Takumi’s modern take on Japanese cuisine to a wider audience. Later this summer, the eatery hopes to open.
The neighborhood food scene has long included the 4929 Bethesda Avenue address.The Chinese restaurant Wang Dynasty, which operated there from 2019 until 2025, just closed. For ten and a half years before that, Shanghai Village was a popular in the neighborhood, renowned for its authentic Chinese cuisine and for being a hangout for local celebrities, including basketball great Red Auerbach.
