On Sunday, Attorney General Anthony G. Brown issued the following statement on President Trump’s deployment of federalized National Guard troops:
“President Trump’s decision to activate the National Guard under Title 10 and deploy them to Los Angeles—over the objections of California’s governor—is a deeply alarming abuse of executive power. This is not a good-faith effort to preserve law and order; it is a calculated move to intimidate Americans who dare to speak out.
First it was the southern border, now it is Los Angeles—and tomorrow it could be Baltimore, Prince George’s County, or anywhere in Maryland. This escalation is a dangerous precursor to the use of military force to suppress dissent and target critics of the president.
By federalizing state troops without consent, the Trump administration is undermining democratic principles, threatening civil liberties, and testing the boundaries of authoritarian control.
As Maryland’s Chief Legal Officer, I condemn this reckless action and stand with states and communities across the nation in defending the Constitution and the right to protest.”
