Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Portions of Maryland and Northern Virginia

Montgomery, west central Howard, and southeast Frederick counties in Maryland, as well as portions of Loudoun and Fairfax counties in Virginia, are among the counties in Maryland and Northern Virginia that are under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS). This Sunday, August 17, till 7:00 PM EDT, the alert is in force.

The NWS reports that severe thunderstorms are heading east at 25 mph and were identified just after 6:12 PM EDT along a line that runs from near Ballenger Creek to Leesburg. With wind gusts of up to 60 mph, the storms present a serious risk.

According to the NWS, these destructive winds have the potential to bring down trees and huge branches, which might harm people, inflict property damage, and obstruct roads. Additionally, localized power outages could occur. It is recommended that residents secure any lightweight items that might fly into the air.

Germantown, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Olney, Damascus, Poolesville, Potomac, and North Potomac are among the communities affected by the notice.
