U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) issued a statement on Friday about the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from custody. Despite a 2019 court order that prevented his deportation, Garcia was deported to El Salvador in March while living in Beltsville, Maryland, and was subsequently detained there. In June, he was sent back to the United States to face charges of people smuggling after court decisions, including one from the U.S. Supreme Court.
Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s right to due process is being upheld by our judicial system, despite the Trump Administration’s persistent attempts to violate our Constitution. I’m happy that he is being sent back to his family and home, where he belongs, in accordance with the court’s decision. The Administration will undoubtedly keep trying to violate Mr. Abrego Garcia’s rights, but we will keep fighting to keep them upheld because due process in this case doesn’t stop when he is released.
Before the Trump Administration takes any more action against Mr. Abrego Garcia, he must be given the opportunity to defend himself in court. This is more than simply one guy or one case; if the rights of one person are violated, then the rights of everyone other are also in jeopardy.
