Remembering Local Meteorologist Doug Hill

Lawrence Douglas “Doug” Hill was a prominent meteorologist in the DC metro area. The legendary local meteorologist was synonymous with DC area weather for over three decades. He was born on July 29, 1950, in Towson, Maryland, and passed away on November 22, 2021, at the age of 71 in Leland, North Carolina.




Hill graduated from Towson State College. His path to meteorology was not direct, according to

. Before beginning his career in weather, he served for four years in the United States Air Force, primarily stationed at Andrews Air Force Base. After his military service, he spent six years as the public information officer for Prince George’s County Police.

Doug Hill’s meteorology career began in Richmond, Virginia, where he got his first opportunity as the weekend weatherman at WWBT-TV. He then moved to Detroit, working at WXYZ for four and a half years.

He returned to the East Coast in 1984, joining CBS affiliate WUSA in Washington, D.C.

He remained with WUSA for 16 years before transitioning to ABC 7 News/WJLA-TV. At WJLA-TV, he served as the chief meteorologist, delivering forecasts at noon, 4, 5, and 6 PM. In addition to his television work, he was a familiar voice on WTOP 103.5 FM, providing “Weather On The 8s And When It Breaks” segments until his retirement. He also worked as a radio personality on WGTS 91.9 FM, a Christian radio station, where he aimed to use his platform for Christian ministry. Doug Hill retired from WJLA-TV on September 15, 2017.

Throughout his distinguished career, Doug Hill received several accolades. He was awarded the “Seal of Approval” from the American Meteorological Society and was honored with a Washington Emmy Award for broadcast excellence.
