Propane Grill Explosion Triggers Two-Alarm House Fire; Woman and Dog Escape, Cat Dies

A house fire in Silver Spring’s 900 block of Helena Drive was attended to the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) on Sunday afternoon.

A gas grill exploded, setting fire to the rear porch and spreading through the roof, according to MCFRS spokesperson David Pazos. A cat was discovered dead, while an elderly woman and her dog managed to flee without incident and refused medical transportation.

About 85 people were on the scene when a second alert and task force were sent out due to the intense heat and fire conditions.

Update: 900 blocks The Helena Dr. house fire began outside and spread to the first and second floors of the two-story SFH.
