Two defendants were recently taken into custody by the Financial Crimes Unit (FCU) of the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) in relation to a carrier scam that involved posing as Federal Trade Commission (FTC) agents. The accused are Jianwei Wang, 27, of Monterey Park, California, and Zheng Xie, 30, of Flushing, New York.
PGPD reports that FCU investigators launched an investigation into this scam on May 15, 2025. The victim reported that she was alerted to fraudulent activity on her Apple ID by a call from an unidentified number on April 28, 2025. The victim was persuaded that multiple of her accounts were compromised by the caller, who was posing as an FTC agent. To secure her funds, she was told to take out cash from her bank. When fake FTC agents visited the victim’s home on two different occasions, she gave them tens of thousands of dollars. On May 23, 2025, Xie and Wang were taken into custody by PGPD FCU detectives after an investigation.
On this inquiry, the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office is collaborating closely with the PGPD. Both accused were indicted by a grand jury last week. They face comparable allegations, including conspiracy to commit theft.
Two more victims connected to these criminals have been identified by PGPD police. The three confirmed victims have lost a total of $700,000 thus far. Investigators believe that other county residents were harmed by the accused and their possible accomplices, and they are urging them to come forward.
Residents are reminded by the PGPD to never offer cash, gold, gift cards, or anything else of value to strangers, especially if they are claiming to be from reputable companies, banks, or government organizations. Additionally, you should use the number on the back of your bank card to call your bank if needed.
