The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) swiftly ended an active shooter report at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda this morning after determining the suspect was carrying a plastic training gun. The person is not facing charges after it was determined that the event, which sparked a large police response, had no malicious intent.
At at 10:24 a.m., Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) officers from the 2nd District were called regarding a potential active shooter and sent to the 8900 block of Rockville Pike. The address is the same as the campus of Walter Reed Medical Center. Officers arrived and arrested a man adult who looked to be armed. The weapon was promptly recognized as a phony firearm, and the location was secured.
Later, MCPD confirmed that the person was carrying a plastic training rifle in their situational update. According to the department’s statement, the individual will not be charged because there was no malicious intent. The community is not currently under danger; the incident was a false alarm.
