New “Student Transition Day” Aims to Ease Students into New School Years

On Monday, August 25, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will launch Student Transition Day, a brand-new, full-day program for the 2025–2026 academic year. Before all of the children return, this non-instructional day is meant to assist them get used to the new school levels and facilities.

By promoting a feeling of familiarity, readiness, and belonging, the official first day of school should go more smoothly. MCPS claims that Transition Day is a focused program for particular student populations starting a new stage of their academic careers. The purpose of the day is:

Every kid starting kindergarten, sixth grade, and ninth grade.pupils entering intermediate schools in Grade 3.Any kid who is new to MCPS or who is moving or transferring to a different school.

MCPS explains that Transition Day is not the same as an Open House. Every school designs its own plan for Transition Day, which is a student-focused event that takes place throughout the school day. On the other hand, an Open House usually takes place in the evening and is intended for families.

Buses will operate on their usual first-day-of-school schedule on Transition Day for the convenience of families. In addition to bringing their own lunch, students can purchase lunch at the school. Parents and guardians are advised to get in touch with their individual schools to find out about before and aftercare options.

Just one day prior to Tuesday, August 26, the formal start of classes for all students, Student Transition Day will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025. Parents should keep an eye out for more detailed information from MCPS and their child’s school about the day’s schedule.
