New Metro Map Unveiled as Service Changes Take Effect Sunday, June 22

Published On:

Longer weekend hours, more frequent Red and Silver Line service during peak hours, and new split Silver Line service are just a few of the new service enhancements Metro announced it is implementing starting Sunday, June 22.

During the heaviest periods of weekday rush hours, Red Line trains will now operate at least every 4 minutes (increased from every 5 minutes) starting on Monday, June 23.

Changes to the Silver Line’s service schedule: Half of the trains will now run between Ashburn and Downtown Largo, and the other half will run between Ashburn and New Carrollton. On weekdays, extra Silver Line trains will go from Stadium-Armory to Wiehle-Reston East in the afternoon and from Wiehle-Reston East to New Carrollton in the morning during rush hour. In order to guarantee that they arrive at the station of their choice, passengers are reminded to verify the train’s destination prior to boarding.

The Yellow Line will be extended by Metro in December, with half of the trains running between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square and the other half between Huntington and Greenbelt. The number of passengers on America’s Metro keeps increasing. We keep looking for ways to serve more customers and give the area the service it deserves as more people utilize the system to get to their homes, places of employment, and places of recreation, said Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke.

According to Metro Board Chair Valerie Santos, “extending rail service hours to better meet our customers’ needs without raising fares is a win for riders and a testament to our staff’s budget discipline and commitment to continuous improvement in operational efficiency.”

New branding revisions are included in the Metrorail map for 2025.In order to account for impending modifications to the Silver and Yellow lines, Metro is also releasing its updated rail maps for 2025. The map will be shown on digital screens in train stations beginning on June 22. In the upcoming weeks, stations and trains will have updated printed maps. The extended Yellow Line service pattern will be depicted on these paper maps, although it should be noted that the service won’t start until December.

Among the modifications are:

  • A hashed line to indicate the split on the Silver Line. Customers are encouraged to pay attention to the end-line station listed on digital signage before boarding eastbound trains.
  • New rail disc logos are here! The line-specific logos seen throughout the rail system and at the end of the lines on the map will go from a two-letter code to one, making them larger and easier to read. For example, the Red Line is going from RD to R .
  • For Avenue based stations, Metro is changing the style from Ave. to Av. which aligns with the bus destination signs that also use Av.

Additionally, Metro is alerting passengers of the recently revamped transit system that will debut on Sunday, June 29. Additional materials and information are available at www.wmata.com/betterbus.
