General Manager Mike Rizzo and Manager Dave Martinez have been fired by the Washington Nationals. Mark D. Lerner, the owner of the Nats, stated in a statement that new energy and a new strategy were required.
When the current ownership group, the Lerners, declared in early 2022 that they were reviewing their options for the team’s future, it was generally assumed that they were thinking about selling. Although they were no longer actively seeking to sell the team altogether, Mark Lerner did discuss looking into other options, such as selling minority holdings, in February 2025.
Some local media, such as JP Finlay of NBC Sports, have speculated that the firing of Rizzo and Martinez in July may result in a possible sale of the franchise. Unless the Lerners are simply clearing the decks to sell, it is illegal to fire Mike Rizzo in the middle of July. They destroyed the winner he had constructed for them. The Nationals’ entire statement is available below:
Citing the need for a new strategy and new enthusiasm, the Washington Nationals today announced the replacement of longtime General Manager Dave Martinez and President of Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo. Mark D. Lerner, managing principal owner of the Washington Nationals, made the news today.
I want to thank Mike and Davey for their contributions to our franchise and our city on behalf of our family and the Washington Nationals organization. Lerner stated. For their years of service to the organization, including helping to bring a World Series trophy to Washington, D.C., our family will always be grateful. Although we are grateful for their prior accomplishments, neither our supporters nor we have been pleased with their on-field performance. Our Club is at a turning point, and we think that the best way for our team to proceed going ahead is with new ideas and enthusiasm.
