MoCo Native Sash Sujith is Bringing Joy to the County Through Bhangra

Published On:

In the heart of Montgomery County, a new wave of energy and excitement is taking over Monday evenings. Meet Sash Sujith, a Montgomery County native with a passion for dance and community, who is transforming the way adults in the area engage with the vibrant art of Bhangra. A former member of the University of Maryland’s competitive Bhangra team, Sash felt a void after graduation– a lack of spaces where adults could dance purely for fun and connection. This realization inspired the launch of

MitranDe Bhangra Workshops

in June.

Every Monday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sash invites participants to 16923 Norwood Rd. in Sandy Spring for an evening filled with rhythm and joy. These Bhangra classes are specifically designed for empty-nesters, working parents, young professionals new to Maryland, college students home for the summer, and anyone else stuck in the work-home rut. Unlike local dance academies that often focus on children or competitive routines, MitranDe Bhangra is all about joy, movement, and community connection.

The first class is free, allowing newcomers to experience the infectious energy of Bhangra without any commitment. Additionally, on July 31st, MitranDe Bhangra will host a special “2-Hour Bhangra Party.” Priced at $25, the event promises Bhangra choreography, exciting prizes, games, and light refreshments.

Originally an energetic folk dance from the Punjab region of India, Bhangra was traditionally performed during harvest festivals and celebrations. Today, it has evolved into a global phenomenon with hundreds of teams and competitions worldwide. Bhangra combines cardio with swagger, making it a perfect way to show off your moves at a friend’s wedding and become the star of the dance floor.

The inspiration for MitranDe Bhangra came from a heartfelt conversation Sash had with his mother. She expressed the exhaustion that often accompanies a life revolving solely around work and home. Sash wanted to offer people like her a break from the monotony of daily routines.
