On Sunday, June 29, Metro announced that it was leading the debut of its new bus network, the first major redesign of the Metrobus system since 1973. In line with the changing transport needs of the area, this ground-breaking project will provide communities in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia with more frequent, dependable, and user-friendly bus service. The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is starting a significant revamp of the Ride On bus system at the same time.
Coordinating with regional partners is another aspect of the redesign. On June 30, TheBus will debut its new network in Prince George’s County; certain routes will switch between Metro and TheBus to ensure seamless service. Ride On’s new network, which will improve connectivity in Montgomery County, launches on June 29.
According to Metro Board Chair Valerie Santos, redesigning a bus network of this magnitude without increasing funding calls for ingenuity, technological know-how, and a dedication to operational effectiveness. The Board is grateful for the tremendous amount of consideration and care Metro employees have put into this intricate undertaking. Metro’s new, updated bus network, which was informed by more than 21,000 public comments, is intended to preserve Metro’s dedication to providing our region with safe, dependable, and top-notch transit service while also providing much-needed service to previously underserved communities.
The region is seeing the installation of new bus stop signs that display both current and upcoming route information. Supplementary signage that provide extra resources, such as Metro’s website and customer service number, 202-GO-METRO (TTY202-962-2033), are also being placed.
