During ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcast of the Commanders/Bengals game this week, the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) girls flag football teams had an amazing moment when they were honored. The official MCPS Athletics X account proudly announced that Monday night football saw the @MCPS Girls Flag teams raise the flag! We are incredibly proud of our coaches and student-athletes for their outstanding performances on the national stage! The second season will be.

The county’s sporting scene has benefited greatly with the introduction of girls’ flag football in MCPS. Under the direction of MCPS Athletics and the Washington Commanders, the league offers female student-athletes a chance to play a dynamic and exciting sport that develops leadership, teamwork, and agility. High schools from all throughout the county enthusiastically participated in the first season, and teams displayed remarkable talent and sportsmanship.

The MCPS Girls Flag Football league was founded and has grown thanks in large part to the Washington Commanders. The Commanders teamed up with MCPS to give the league funding, support, and awareness in recognition of the sport’s growing popularity and the desire for more possibilities for female athletes. The student-athletes have benefited from coaching seminars, equipment gifts, and—most importantly—the chance to be featured on a national stage such as Monday Night Football. The halftime games featured student athletes from Seneca Valley, Paint Branch, Wheaton, and Walter Johnson.
