Ty Xanders was the first to announce that McDonogh lacrosse coach Andy Hilgartner was departing the program after 17 seasons to take a position as head coach at Georgetown Prep in North Bethesda. With this departure, Hilgartner at McDonogh ends a very successful era and starts a new one at one of the most prominent lacrosse programs in the Washington, DC, area.

McDonogh’s Championship Legacy Comes to an EndFollowing a spectacular stint with the McDonogh Eagles, Andy Hilgartner has left. He led the squad to four MIAA A Conference titles in his 17 seasons as head coach. His accomplishment is especially noteworthy because the MIAA A conference is regarded as one of the most difficult high school lacrosse leagues in the country. Hilgartner solidified his position as one of the nation’s best high school coaches during his time by turning the Eagles into a national force.

In a message to USA Lacrosse, Hilgartner thanked McDonogh for being a fantastic school and community throughout his stay there. His three sons all played for and graduated from the institution, so it was a tough decision to go. At Georgetown Prep, a school with a long history of lacrosse, Hilgartner will succeed him as head coach. He is taking over for Scott Urick, who left the school last month after spending nine seasons guiding the Little Hoyas to three IAC football titles.

Hilgartner will take charge of a program that has consistently been a force in the IAC when he takes over at Georgetown Prep. He told reporters that he is incredibly thankful for the opportunity to contribute to the school’s legacy and that he is excited about the new opportunity. Fans in the Baltimore and Washington, DC, metro areas will be closely monitoring this coaching move, which is a significant upheaval in the high school lacrosse community.
