The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) is offering free adoptions for all dogs on Saturday, August 23, and Sunday, August 24, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at its facility at 7315 Muncaster Mill Rd. in Derwood as part of a nationwide Clear the Shelters event.
The shelter is taking steps to guarantee a seamless adoption process and anticipates a high volume of applicants. All prospective adopters are required to book a time slot online in order to control crowds and wait times. On Sunday, August 17th, the scheduling links for dogs, cats, and other pets (such as birds, reptiles, and bunnies) went online. Appointments must be made in advance because late arrivals could not be accepted.
You can choose up to two animals to meet by taking a tour of the shelter prior to your planned appointment. You will either get 15 minutes to spend with two cats or small animals during your visit, or you will have 25 minutes to spend with two dogs. The pet’s medical and behavioral history will then be reviewed with you by an adoption counselor. Bring a carrier or leash/collar and a government-issued photo ID so you are ready to take your new pet home that day.
You can look at the adoptable animals online before you visit for a more seamless experience. Only one appointment should be scheduled per household, and if you are unable to attend, please cancel so that another person can take your place.
