MBI Cafe Hosts Showcase as Summer RISE Interns Launch Signature Drink

Published On:

Montgomery College’s MBI Cafe internship program will host its culminating event on Wednesday, July 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Services building lobby on the Rockville campus. The event marks the final project for students participating in the Summer RISE internship, who have spent several weeks learning about socially responsible business practices through the MBI Cafe’s “Triple Bottom Line” approach, which emphasizes profit, people, and planet.

Throughout the program, students completed barista training through the We Proudly Serve Starbucks program, studied business fundamentals like cost of goods sold, income statements, and profit margins, and developed marketing plans to support a student-run cafe. They also explored environmental initiatives and how the cafe benefits the local community.

At the culminating event, Summer RISE participants, mentored by MBI students, will rotate through various roles as they help run the cafe, share information with customers, and highlight the cafe’s sustainability practices. The event will feature a special drink created by the interns, called “The Summer Rise,” along with educational materials and promotions like eco-friendly mugs and repurposed coffee grounds. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Montgomery College Student Emergency Fund.
