Yesterday, President Donald Trump shared on social media that the Washington Commanders should change the team name back to Redskins “IMMEDIATELY.” He followed that up by writing that he “may put a restriction on them that if they don’t change the name back to the original “Washington Redskins,” and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, “Washington Commanders,” I won’t make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington.” Today, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser answered questions about the the president’s threat.

According to

Eric Flack of WUSA9

, Trump can kill RFK Deal with Executive Action cancelling the lease, a National Capital Planning Commission that casts critical votes on construction projects including on the RFK site, and a Commission of Fine Arts, which reviews design of all DC construction. Trump just appointed board members for the second two options.

Bowser stated today, “I am focused on getting the best deal for District taxpayers and getting the deal across the finish line. I have heard from no District residents complaining about the name change or saying this is an issue in connection with the stadium.”

Flack shared on X

that Bowser “sidestepped questions about level concern over Trump threat to kill RFK stadium deal if team didn’t go back to old name, saying only DC Council needs to act.” When she was asked if she would withdraw support for the DC stadium if the Redskins name returned, Bowser said “No.”
