Last summer, Readers Digest combed the nation to identify the best ice creams in the United States and created a list of the top ice cream shops in each state. The winner from Maryland now has sites in Washington, DC, and throughout the state.
Named after the nickname of the city where it began (Baltimore), The Charmery today operates three locations in Baltimore, one each in Howard County and Washington, DC, and recently shuttered its Montgomery County (Chevy Chase) site. The Charmery was voted sixth on Montgomery County’s Mr. MoCo’s 2024 favorite ice cream/frozen treat list before it closed.
In 2013, The Charmery established its first location in the Hampden district of Baltimore. David and Laura Alima, a husband and wife combination, have since opened three more locations. In addition to being a staple in Baltimore, The Charmery has swiftly established itself as a premier and incredibly unique ice cream destination on the East Coast. They have won multiple Best of Baltimore accolades since they opened, andThrillest previously ranked them among the top 40 ice cream stores in America.
Additionally, Alima and his Ice Cream crew have gained recognition for their unique, limited-edition, and seasonal flavors. Every week, they introduce a brand-new, limited-edition #FridayFlavorDrop flavor that is only meant to be available for a few days. Some of these include partnerships with regional and national sports, artists, and singers, all of whom support a local nonprofit. Saffron Olive Oil, Saturday Morning Cartoons (sugar cereal ice cream with cereal marshmallows), Cheese and Crackers (cheddar cheese ice cream with Ritz cracker bits), and Ice Cream Sando (a flavor that tastes just like an ice cream sandwich) are some of their most popular varieties.
Per Reader’s Digest:Maryland Mud, Saturday Morning Cartoons, and Mango Lime Hot Sauce are just a few of the inventive tastes available at The Charmery in Baltimore, which is conveniently located within walking distance of the esteemed Johns Hopkins University. Most importantly, Old Bay ice cream, a Maryland classic, is sold at this Charm City ice cream establishment. This eccentric ice cream business also sells homemade marshmallows and enchanted spoons that change color.
