After being accused of misusing nearly $26,000 that was received through a GoFundMe campaign to pay for a relative’s funeral, a Maryland lady was taken into custody.
Yesenia Amaya was found and taken into custody with the help of the Landover Hills Police Department, according to the Arlington County Police Department. After being extradited to Virginia, where she is being held without bond at the Arlington County Detention Facility, she was served with outstanding warrants from Arlington County.
Amaya, who is characterized as a distant relative, offered to start a GoFundMe campaign to aid with burial expenses after a family member of the victim unexpectedly passed away in Arlington in September 2023, according to the police. With the help of the community, the campaign raised almost $26,000. Later on, though, it was found that Amaya had taken the money out and not used it for what it was supposed to.
