Maryland is Home to The Best Reuben in the DC Area, According to Washington Post Readers

Published On:

The Washington Post asked “

What’s the best sandwich in DC?

” and split the results into eleven different categories. In the Reuben category the winner came from Montgomery County, Maryland’s very own

Parkway Deli

.

In early March, the Washington Post set out to find the best sandwiches in the DC area by asking readers for their favorite picks and reasons why they stood out. Nearly 150 responses were collected and categorized into 11 groups, such as Best Philly Cheesesteak, Best Gyro, Best Italian, and more. Readers then voted on the top three nominees in each category, with input from Washington Post staff. After tallying over 730 votes, winners were determined for each category, and the WaPo team sampled the winning sandwiches to ensure quality.

The old-school, NYC-style deli located at 8317 Grubb Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20910 (a few feet away from what’s considered Chevy Chase). They offer sandwiches, breakfast options, soups/salads,  and other traditional fare. Parkway is also known for its pickle bar.

Parkway Deli was opened in 1963 by Lou Gurewitz, along with his sister Rose and her husband Mike. They named it “Parkway Deli” because of its proximity to Rock Creek Park. Lou’s oldest son, Stuart, took over the business in 1974 and worked hard to turn it into the institution it is today. After more than 30 years, Stuart retired, and now his two sons, Danny and Gary, represent the third generation of the Gurewitz family to continue the deli tradition.
