Maryland Cannabis Sales Tax Rises to 12% Starting Tuesday

Maryland’s adult-use cannabis and cannabis product sales tax will rise from 9% to 12% starting this Tuesday, May 1. During the 2025 legislative session, the General Assembly approved the new rate.

The extra 3% of the 12% tax will go to the general revenue of the state. According to Maryland law, the Comptroller of Maryland is in charge of collecting sales and use tax money from adult-use cannabis retail sales throughout the state.

In a ballot referendum on November 8, 2022, Maryland voters authorized the legalization of cannabis for recreational use by adults 21 years of age and older. On July 1, 2023, sales for adult use became legal.

Peake ReLeafin Rockville was recently chosen as the county’s best dispensary for 2025 by readers of The Montgonion, a local satirical publication that combines humor with genuine community involvement. The rankings were based on factors including service, assortment, pricing, rewards, and parking. As the statewide tax hike is about to go into effect, the poll, which garnered over 2,500 votes, emphasized the advantages of nearby dispensaries.
