Born Robert Lawrence Stine in Columbus, Ohio, R.L. Stine is a prolific American novelist who is most recognized for his young adult and children’s horror literature. Known as the Stephen King of children’s novels, he has authored hundreds of books that have sold over 400 million copies worldwide.

It wasn’t horror that made Stine start. While employed at Scholastic, he founded the teen comedy magazine Bananas and first authored children’s humor novels under the pen name Jovial Bob Stine. Blind Date, his debut young adult horror book, was a success when it came out in 1986. As a result, the Fear Street television series was produced in 1989.

The Goosebumps series, which debuted in 1992, is Stine’s most well-known creation. TV adaptations, spin-off book series, and feature films resulted from the series’ global success. He used humor to counterbalance the horrific aspects of the stories, purposefully avoiding blood and keeping them imaginative.
