Leadership Change Announced at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School: Dr. Shelton Mooney Departs, Interim Leaders Appointed

Published On:

According to a letter given to the B-CC community, Principal Dr. Shelton Mooney has decided to resign and take a new position with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), resulting in a leadership transition at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School (B-CC). In contrast to a previous notification that had assigned him to Albert Einstein High School, Dr. Mooney will be relocating to James Hubert Blake High School to work as an assistant principle.

Dr. Michael J. Zarchin, Director of the MCPS Division of School Leadership and Improvement, made the announcement in a letter to the B-CC community. Dr. Zarchin wished Dr. Mooney luck in his upcoming chapter within the educational system and conveyed gratitude for his six years of leadership and dedication at B-CC. Since taking over as principal in 2019, Dr. Mooney has guided the school through a number of difficulties, such as important safety-related community talks and a recent defamation case that was reported by Bethesda Magazine.

The school will have recognizable and seasoned leadership in the interim. Mr. DeBerry Goodwin, the assistant principal, will fill in as acting principal for the time being. Mr. Kevin Yates, a well-respected and seasoned retired principle, will also be welcomed by the B-CC community as acting principal with effect from August 12, 2025. As the former principal of Damascus High School and, most recently, the acting principal of Montgomery Blair High School, Yates brings a plethora of expertise to the table. Earlier this month, his tenure at Blair, where he was characterized as an engaging and community-focused individual, came to an end.

Along with ongoing staff assistance and solid family partnerships, Dr. Zarchin stressed that the health, academic progress, and overall development of B-CC students continue to be the top priorities. Early in the academic year, the community will receive further details on the selection process for B-CC’s next permanent principal.
