Jayden Daniels, quarterback for the Washington Commanders, sustained a rib injury during the 2024 NFL season that was first thought to be week-to-week. On October 20, 2024, during the opening offensive drive of a game against the Carolina Panthers, the injury happened. Daniels casually remarked that he had a broken rib in a recent video (see the video below).
After a lengthy run during the Panthers game, Daniels was tackled and landed awkwardly. He was later brought to the locker room for X-rays as he completed the drive. The club stated at the time that they were exercising caution and that the injury was not a long-term problem. The following week, Daniels was allowed to play against the Chicago Bears, throwing a Hail Mary touchdown that won the game.
Daniels revealed in the most recent video that he was playing with a broken rib at the time, giving his valiant performance against the Bears extra context. When the quarterback made the revelation, he was part of a film that included Justin Jefferson and Saquon Barkley studying well-known Hail Mary plays. His ability to execute a game-winning, long-distance pass despite a serious injury is all the more remarkable in light of this revelation.
Daniels had a great debut season, with the rib injury being only one obstacle. Expectations were broken by the Heisman Trophy winner, who immediately became one of the league’s most promising young players. After throwing for 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns with a passer rating of 100.1, he was awarded the 2024 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.
With 891 yards on the ground and six rushing touchdowns, he also shattered the rookie quarterback rushing record that Robert Griffin III had previously held. Daniels won over a previously disenchanted fan base and demonstrated that his Heisman-winning performance was no accident by leading the Commanders to their first postseason participation in years and, eventually, to their first NFC Championship game since the 1991 season.
