Heat Emergency Alert Extended Through Wednesday; Heat Index Values to Reach 105º F or Higher

The Heat Emergency Alert in Montgomery County has been extended until Wednesday, July 30 at 9 p.m. Heat index readings are predicted to hit 105 degrees Fahrenheit or above throughout this time. Residents are urged to drink enough of water, spend as little time outside as possible, and, whenever feasible, take frequent rests in cool, shaded, or air-conditioned spaces.

Montgomery County advises residents to take preventative measures against heat-related illnesses such heat exhaustion and heat stroke in order to save themselves, their loved ones, and their pets. Try to remain somewhere with air conditioning. If you work outside or spend time outside, take particular care. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, make sure to stay hydrated. Take regular pauses in a cool, shaded spot if you can.

During regular business hours, county amenities such as libraries, swimming pools, leisure centers, and senior centers are available for cooling down.Public spaces like shopping centers could also be used.

During this heat emergency, the Office of Animal Services shall enforce Executive Regulations 17-17, Anti Cruelty Conditions for Dogs and Other Pets. An animal’s outside housing as specified in Section 3.0 is insufficient during a Heat Emergency Alert, and extra steps must be taken to provide proper cooling.The director of the Montgomery County Animal Services Division must provide his approval to the additional measures. Pets should never be left outside unsupervised during periods of intense heat.
