Governor Wes Moore’s Statement on Assassination of Minnesota Elected Official & Husband, and Attempt on Life of Another Elected Official & Family

Published On:

Governor Wes Moore issued the following statement on Saturday, June 14:

I am devastated by the targeted, politically motivated attack that took the life of former Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, in their Brooklyn Park home, and grievously injured State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.

This act of violence strikes at the very heart of our democracy: public servants should never face danger for serving their communities. We need to be able to disagree about policy issues without resorting to violence. Our democracy depends on it.

Dawn and I extend our deepest condolences and prayers to both families and the people of Minnesota, and we stand united in demanding justice and a renewed commitment to civil discourse. We must meet this moment with courage, compassion, and unwavering moral clarity.
