According to the news release, Governor Wes Moore is warning residents of Maryland to get ready for severe storms and possible flash flooding that are predicted for this afternoon. All counties in Maryland are currently under a flood watch, with the exception of Garrett and Allegany counties, and the I-95 corridor and upper Eastern Shore are at the highest risk for consequences. The hours of 3 p.m. to midnight today evening are predicted to see the most rainfall.

“The safety of Marylanders is our top priority,” Governor Moore stated. We ask everyone to do their bit by closely following public safety messaging, keeping an eye on local weather forecasts, and keeping an eye out for loved ones as the State of Maryland remains prepared and organized in anticipation of possible flash floods.

A cold front is expected to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms that could cause extensive flooding and destructive winds in certain areas, according to the National Weather Service. Rainfall rates of 1-2 per half hour and isolated total rainfall amounts of 4-6 are possible in some places.

If there is flash flooding in your area:

  • Follow public safety messages, including evacuating or sheltering in place.
  • Move to higher ground or a higher floor.
  • Do not walk, swim or drive through floodwaters.Turn Around, Don t Drown!
  • Remember, just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.

In anticipation of the storm, the State Emergency Operations Center will activate at 2:00 PM today, and the Maryland Department of Emergency Management is increasing the State Activation Level.

The forecast and any emergency notifications, especially those requesting an evacuation or sheltering in place, should be attentively monitored by Marylanders.
