First Level 3 “Enhanced Severe Weather Threat” Since 2023 Issued For the Area

Published On:

A Level 3 Enhanced Risk for Severe Weather has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for Washington, DC, the majority of Maryland, and portions of Northern Virginia between 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. today.

In certain areas, this is the first Level 3 threat since the summer of 2023. With high humidity and expected afternoon highs in the low 90s, there is a chance of late afternoon/evening storms that could turn severe.

There is a significant risk of damaging winds, big hail, one or two tornadoes, and isolated flooding, according to the NWS. It is recommended that residents keep an eye on the most recent forecasts and make sure they are getting watches and warnings through at least two channels, such as radio, television, or the phone. Storms with an enhanced risk are more likely to be widespread and/or persistent, and there may be a number of severe storms that are quite large.
