On October 15, 2024, what began as a routine school dismissal at Rolling Terrace Elementary School quickly turned into a harrowing moment that showcased extraordinary courage. As students were leaving for the day, a young child broke away from a parent and bolted toward the bus lane just as a bus was pulling out. In that split second, Jefferson Reyes, a fifth-grade member of the school’s safety patrol, reacted instantly– leaping into action to pull the child from harm’s way and likely saving a life.
Jefferson’s heroic intervention did not go unnoticed. In recognition of his bravery and quick thinking in a high-stakes situation, he was honored with the AAA School Safety Patrol Lifesaving Award on June 11, 2025, joining three other students nationwide who received the distinction this year. “It is the highest honor bestowed upon any safety patroller in our country,” explained Ragina Ali, Public and Government Affairs Manager for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “Jefferson’s immediate action saved a life.”
Reflecting on the incident, Jefferson expressed his gratitude and humility. “I still can’t explain it,” he said. “I’m just really happy. I saved a life, and I’m proud. My friends celebrated me, and I’m just thankful.” His sentiments were echoed by other school officials. Kaneene Livingston, a STEM teacher who supervised dismissal in the bus lane, remarked on the critical impact of Jefferson’s decision: “I’m so proud of him. That child could have been seriously hurt or worse, but Jefferson reacted immediately and saved a life.” Charles Silberman, the school’s physical education teacher and patrol sponsor who nominated him for the award, added, “The act itself was lifesaving. Jefferson is thoughtful, hardworking, and truly cares about others. He has the qualities of a leader, and I hope this moment helps him see the value he has and the difference he can make.”
Jefferson’s mother, Lorena Rubio, shared her deep pride in her son’s actions, noting, “I am so proud that he is my son.” At the award ceremony, an emotional Jefferson thanked his mother and credited her teachings for his daring act: “I want to thank my mom for always teaching me to never give up. I’m happy I listened to her advice. I don’t have the words… I’m just really, really happy.”
