Downed Tree Forces Middle School to Close Monday, Tuesday’s Status TBD

Published On:

Westland Middle School, located at 5511 Massachusetts Ave. in Bethesda, will be closed on Monday, June 16, following significant damage caused by a downed tree. The removal of the tree has necessitated the closure of several classrooms, and operations for Tuesday have not yet been determined. A message went out to the Westland community on Sunday night:

“Dear Westland Middle School Families,

Due to weekend weather involving rain and wind, a tree has fallen, causing structural damage affecting classrooms in the rear of the building. The impact in these areas, unfortunately, does not allow for the safe operation of the school for students. MCPS facilities and maintenance staff have been working on Sunday to assess the damage, but the size of the tree requires a large crane, which prohibits safe occupancy of the building for students and a number of staff.  The use of the crane and removal of the tree will require the closing of approximately 18 classrooms. School staff will receive a separate message concerning work for tomorrow.

We know this means disruptions and inconvenience for students, staff and families, and we are very sorry for that. However, the building will not be ready for safe operations on Monday.

We will provide an update via ParentSquare and Remind tomorrow concerning Tuesday operations.
