We announced yesterday that the Staples shop located at 20906 Frederick Road, STE A, is getting ready to close permanently. The office supplies company will formally close its doors for the last time on Thursday, August 29th, according to a store manager. The storefront won’t stay empty for long, though. Dollar Tree has obtained the required license to start renovating the area.
With the new Germantown shop perhaps debuting by the end of the year, this move represents the discount retailer’s ongoing growth in Montgomery County. A smooth transition for the site is suggested by the possibly quick turnaround time between the Staples closure and Dollar Tree’s upgrades.
The Germantown community has long relied on the Staples facility for office supplies, printing services, and back-to-school necessities. Its collapse is indicative of a nationwide trend in which e-commerce and a move toward remote work have become more competitive for traditional office supply chains.
Known for its affordable goods, Dollar Tree has been aggressively expanding its presence in the region. With the opening of the new Germantown location, the company will increase its footprint in Montgomery County, where it has been expanding into larger retail locations to offer a greater range of products. Recently, Dollar Tree started building its new shop at 11130 New Hampshire Avenue in White Oak.
We have previously covered the company’s expansion in our community, including the April 2025 debut of a Dollar Tree in Cloverly Town Center, which was once a karate school. In addition, a new Dollar Tree location recently opened in the Gaithersburg, Kentucky, region, and another opened last year in North Bethesda.
