Dan Quinn Impressed By Deebo Samuel’s Speed Despite Viral Video That Appears to Show Him Running Slower Than Usual

A video taken by local sports reporter Scott Abraham of 7 News DC has gone viral after being shared by numerous football-related X accounts. The video features new Commanders’ acquisition WR Deebo Samuel appearing to run slower than usual during minicamp. However, Head Coach Dan Quinn was impressed by Samuel’s speed.

Ben Standig

shared the following quote from Quinn after he was asked which offseason acquisitions have impressed him:

“Yeah, a number of them, honestly. [WR] Deebo [Samuel] | think has been very impressive to me for maybe a different reason than I thought. He was such a difficult person to tackle that you spent so much time, ‘How are you going to tackle this person?’ And somewhere along the way, l’ve forgotten until out here how fast he is. And so, sometimes when you’re playing against the receiver you say, ‘Man, you better either get him at the line or you better be on top of him.’ With him so many times there was so many run after catch plays that we had a tackling plan and how would you go about it? And then I can remember one time he just ran by somebody down the field on a deep ball and I was like, ‘Yeah, I forgot about that’ [laughs]. So that, it didn’t surprise me, but it was maybe I missed talking about it to that space because it was easily reminded, he’s one of the fastest players on the team.”

The Washington Commanders traded a 2025 fifth-round draft pick to the San Francisco 49ers to acquire wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Samuel is entering the final year of a three-year, $71.55 million extension he signed with the 49ers in 2022. The Commanders have since reworked his deal to guarantee $17 million in his 2025 salary, with an additional $3 million in incentives. This essentially makes it a one-year deal worth up to $20 million for the 2025 season, with the Commanders not being tied to him beyond that if they choose not to extend him.

Put Deebo Samuel in motion and watch him work.
