A mother called the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) at around 9:18 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, to report that her 8-year-old autistic daughter had gone missing from their house. The tale of how the young child was safely found by 5th District officers and community members was relayed by MCPD.

Several Good Samaritans reported seeing the toddler running through traffic near Middlebrook Road and Frederick Road in Germantown while 5th District officers were originally scouring the area. Officer McClellan and other responding officers hurried to the scene in response to these claims. They were able to safely retrieve the youngster before she got into the road, and she was soon reunited with her mother.

According to MCPD, police work with community members to find three to eight people on the autistic spectrum in potentially hazardous situations every week. They stress that every second counts and exhort anyone who suspects a loved one is missing to report them right away. The department’s official website has further details about its Alzheimer’s and Dementia Outreach Unit and Autism/Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Outreach Unit.
