After a lackluster showing in their opening preseason game, the Washington Commanders are not wasting any time in making squad changes. Three new free agent signings and other releases were among the team’s many announcements today, sending a strong message that there is fierce competition for roster places.
The Commanders signed linebacker Duke Riley and cornerbacks Antonio Hamilton Sr. and Essang Bassey as part of the trade. Following a poor showing for a number of players in the team’s preseason debut, which apparently prompted a rush of tryouts for fresh talent, these acquisitions have been made.
The performance of rookie linebacker Dom Hampton, the team’s 2024 fifth-round draft selection, was a major cause for concern following the game. Hampton allegedly had a difficult game, and it is thought that his performance prompted the organization to move quickly to bring in fresh linebackers for a closer look.
The Commanders cut linebacker Dominique Hampton, defensive end Viliami Fehoko Jr., and cornerback Allan George to make way for the new players. The team also added cornerback Kevon Seymour and offensive tackle Lucas Niang to the Reserve/Injured List.
