Chess Lounge at Montgomery Mall Draws Large Opening Weekend Crowd

Published On:

Westfield Montgomery opened its new Chess Lounge Saturday, July 19, drawing a large crowd for the first in a series of weekly community events. The launch coincided with International Chess Day on Sunday, July 20, and featured free instruction, open play, and mini tournaments.

The event series is led by the Chess Alliance, a partnership of regional nonprofits including Chess Girls DC, DC Chess Association, Big Chair Chess Club, and LiveChess Club. The Chess Lounge offers a public space for players of all ages and skill levels to participate in casual and competitive games, attend lessons, and see guest appearances by experienced players.

Events will continue every Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. through September 27, and are free and open to the public. Tournament registration and full event details are available at chessalliance.org.

According to Westfield Montgomery, the idea for the Chess Lounge came from visitor feedback indicating strong interest in chess. The space aims to provide a dedicated setting for in-person, analog interaction through chess-related programming.
