Capitol City Brewing Co. to Permanently Close After 33 Years In DC

Published On:

Located at 1100 New York Ave NW, Washington, DC, the Capitol City Brewing Company has announced its permanent closure after more than thirty years as a pillar of the District’s craft beer scene. On Thursday, August 28, 2025, the brewpub—the first of its kind in Washington, DC, following Prohibition—will close.

The brewery shared a poignant letter with its customers and the community at large on social media to make the announcement. 33+ years, innumerable pints, and one run that will never be forgotten. On August 23, 1992, Cap City, the District’s first brewpub since Prohibition, began for business. We lift our last glass this August. The post was read.

Before closing their doors permanently, Capitol City Brewing Co. asked the public to join them for a final month of festivities, food, and beer. The statement went on, “Please join us for our final rounds of delicious food, cold beer, and a heartfelt goodbye to the community (and team!) that made it all happen.” Let’s end this chapter the way we began: together. Our last day is Thursday, August 28. We look forward to toasting with you during the entire month.

After more than 33 years as a meeting spot for both locals and tourists, the brewery’s shutdown signifies the end of an era. The many breweries and brewpubs that have since sprung up throughout the Washington, DC, area were made possible by Capitol City Brewing Company, which was a trailblazer in the city’s craft beer market.
