The Proper Burger from Duke’s Grocery has been voted the “Best Burger in DC” for the 10th consecutive year in Washington City Paper’s
‘Best of DC.’
Duke’s Grocery opened its first Maryland location in Potomac this past April and has five additional locations in DC (video of the experience below).
Duke’s Grocery, a neighborhood pub concept, was founded by a couple of individuals who shared a love for good food and cold drinks. The first location opened in Dupont Circle, Washington DC, in 2013. The inspiration for Duke’s Grocery comes from the diverse culinary scene of East London’s Shoreditch and Hoxton neighborhoods, aiming to create an unpretentious and laid-back atmosphere.
Duke’s Grocery is renowned for its Proper Burger, now voted “Best Burger in DC” for ten consecutive years. The signature burger typically features two Angus beef patties (often sourced from Creekstone Farms, known for their premium, never-frozen beef), and topped with melted Gouda cheese. Adding to its distinct profile are peppery arugula, tangy pickled red onions, and a duo of sauces– a sweet and spicy chili sauce alongside a rich garlic aioli. All these components are placed within a soft, often locally sourced, brioche or ciabatta bun. The result is a juicy, flavorful burger that delivers a truly “proper” gastropub experience.
