The Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office said on Sunday night that a Montgomery County Grand Jury has indicted Catherine Ashley Hoggle, 38, of Clarksburg, on two charges of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of her children, Sarah and Jacob Hoggle. After being released from a state mental health facility, she was taken into custody in Kent County.

The Montgomery County Police Department released the following statement shortly after the announcement:

A grand jury in Montgomery County indicted 38-year-old Catherine Hoggle on two charges of murder in relation to the disappearance of her two children, and she is currently in detention. In September 2014, Sarah Hoggle, age three, and Jacob Hoggle, age two, were reported missing. According to reports, their mother was the last person seen with them on September 7, 2014.

In an effort to find the kids, Montgomery County Police and many partner organizations have been conducting intensive searches ever since.

Hoggle was first accused of obstruction and child negligence, and then he was charged with murder. She was civilly committed to a psychiatric facility after being deemed incapable to stand trial due to mental health concerns. The month of July 2025 saw her release.

John McCarthy, the state attorney for Montgomery County, called a grand jury after she was freed. On Friday, August 1, 2025, following the indictment, Hoggle was taken into custody by the Montgomery County Department of Police. In anticipation of a bond hearing, she is presently being detained at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.

The facts behind the disappearance of Sarah and Jacob Hoggle are still unknown. The inquiry is still under progress.
