Parents Could Face Charges as Juvenile E-Bike Accidents Increase

Published On:

Jason Cokinos, 2nd District Commander of the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD), says there has been a worrying increase in young people riding electric mini dirt bikes in cities, especially at night, which has resulted in several collisions and safety hazards.

Noting that Class 3 e-bike riders must be at least 16 and that parents may be charged under Maryland law for permitting underage or unsafe operation, he asked parents to have a conversation with their kids about safe e-bike use.

On Friday morning, Cokinos shared the following on Twitter/X:

In our cities, the number of young people riding electric micro motorized dirt motorcycles is alarmingly rising, particularly at night. Children and the community are at risk from this. These e-bikes have been involved in several crashes with us. Additionally, I advise parents to discuss safe operation with their children. Reminder: Class 3 Ebike riders need to be at least 16 years old. Visit www.thecyclistchoice.com to learn more. Under MD Traffic Article 21-1201a or b, parents who knowingly permit or authorize a minor to violate the law may face charges.

A PSA for parents.
