Commanders Takeaways After First Preseason Game

Published On:

The Washington Commanders identified some positive aspects despite losing to the New England Patriots 48–18 in the preseason. The play of a number of young players, particularly rookie defensive lineman Johnny Newton, gave head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt hope despite the absence of thirty players.

One of the highlights was Johnny Newton, a second-year rookie defensive tackle. Newton had a good day, according to Whitt, with some really nice rushes and one-on-one victories. Newton is healthy and prepared to assume a major starting position after battling injuries during the previous season. One of the Commanders’ few huge plays was his strip-sack.

Positive impressions were also made by other rookies. Josh Conerly performed admirably at right tackle, competing with the Patriots’ starting linemen in run blocking and pass protection. He might be a good rotational player or possibly a starter based on his performance. Trey Amos, a cornerback, was particularly noteworthy for his excellent coverage throughout the game and for a deep throw to seasoned Mack Hollins early on.

Despite having a modest yardage total, rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt, also known as Bill, showed potential with his cutting skill and decisiveness. With 42 yards on six carries, veteran running back Demetric Felton led the group and had the greatest night.

The competition for the third-string quarterback position went on. Sam Hartman, a rookie, performed poorly, completing fewer than half of his throws and making an interception. Josh Johnson, a veteran, performed better, going 15 for 22 with a score and an interception. He now seems to be in the lead.

Additionally, the wide receiver depth chart is still unclear. Others had trouble, but rookie Ja Corey Brooks made an impression with five catches for 59 yards. Luke McCaffrey attempted a deep pass but was out for the majority of the game due to illness, and Chris Moore missed a long pass after making a costly drop on third down.

On Monday, August 18th, the Commanders will play their next game against the Bengals. With a healthy roster, the squad wants to perform better and obtain more answers.
