Six vibrant young musicians are introduced by Strathmore as its Artists in Residence (AIR) Class of 2026, a genre-defying group chosen for their originality, talent, and artistic vision. On Wednesday, November 12 at 8 p.m., the performers will make their debut at Fresh AIR at The Music Center.Participants will showcase their original works, creative collaborations, and cross-disciplinary performances at this signature event for one of the area’s top professional development programs for up-and-coming musicians. The public can purchase tickets on Friday, September 5.
According to Lauren Campbell, vice president of education and community engagement at Strathmore, “Our Artists in Residence program is a launchpad for extraordinary talent.” The bold innovation and lively spirit of the Class of 2026 will be felt long after this season is over.
In its 21st year, AIR has provided industry training, professional advice, and performance opportunities to more than 112 musicians between the ages of 16 and 32. As part of Strathmore’s Institute for Artistic Development, participants—who are chosen yearly through a competitive process—are partnered with mentors and participate in workshops, community service, and commissioned projects.

Michael McSweeney, Percussion (January 2026): A percussionist, educator, and bandleader from College Park, Maryland, with a global impact that includes jazz, salsa, and Afro-Cuban traditions. McSweeney performs with many regional organizations in the D.C. area and is the leader of Costas Colectivo.
Trumpet, Cyrus Mackey (February 2026):Mackey, a producer and jazz trumpeter from Baltimore, Maryland, was a finalist for the National YoungArts Foundation and trained with jazz greats Roy Hargrove and Wynton Marsalis. His inventive compositions combine modern sound design and production techniques with classic jazz.
Chris Hon, Keyboard (March 2026): A multi-instrumentalist and keyboardist from Washington, D.C., who uses creative sound design to blend his jazz skills with electronic music. Hon has played at notable locations such as 9:30 Club, Blues Alley, and NPR’s Tiny Desk.
Ellen Gira, cello (April 2026): A cellist from Potomac, Maryland, who blends classical instruction with Old-Time, Scottish, and Irish traditions. Gira, who has a doctorate in Scottish music from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, is a member of the award-winning folk duo Jocelyn Pettit & Ellen Gira, and they tour all over the world.
Voice, Guitar, Violin (May 2026) Juan Man is a singer-songwriter from Washington, D.C., whose Tejano and Mexican roots are celebrated in his Latin-folk songs. With training on classical violin and a wealth of mariachi experience, Man creates music that elevates queer voices by utilizing traditional genres.
Kanysha, Voice (June 2026): An actress, singer, and songwriter from Washington, D.C., with Carnegie Hall and Arena Stage performance credits. Kanysha co-hosts the Downstage Center podcast and posts original music to streaming services.
Under the direction of Grammy Award-winning folk artist and AIR advisor Cathy Fink, the Class of 2026 will be mentored by Grammy-nominated rapper and multi-instrumentalist Christylez Bacon; Billboard-charting violinist, vocalist, and educator Chelsea Green; and jazz drummer and vibraphonist Chuck Redd. During the preview concert, the mentors will also take the stage with the incoming class, collaborating to create original performances that highlight both established and up-and-coming talent.
