Asif Trey Rahman, a well-known figure in Rockville and now Potomac, devoted almost thirty years of his professional life to public service in the Department of Defense while fervently influencing the lives of young basketball players. But a major turning point came earlier this year when Rahman abruptly left his long-standing government job due to sweeping layoffs throughout the federal government. Instead of being a setback, this difficulty sparked a career change that turned a cherished weekend pastime into The Burger Coach, a culinary endeavor with a community purpose.
In addition to coaching his own kids and working extensively with girls basketball teams in the DMV area, Rahman developed The Coach Creative, a platform that offers athletes skills training and mental performance coaching. Among the nationally competitive AAU teams he has coached are the Adidas Maryland Shooting Stars and the Under Armour 6th Man Warriors. He has influenced coaches and athletes in the Middle East, Asia, and South America, demonstrating his global reach.
Rahman was able to transform his longstanding love of coaching and community service into a brand-new arena food as a result of the layoff. It quickly developed into a full-fledged family business after starting out as a self-described foodie’s weekend treat, experimenting with freshly produced patties and homemade sauces for friends and family. This sudden change in his career gave Rahman the chance to establish a business that is firmly anchored in the neighborhood he loves.
The Burger Coach is a catering business that offers a high-end, customized culinary experience; it is not your normal food truck. Rahman and his family travel over Montgomery County to deliver their freshly made burgers and special sauces to private gatherings. With a developing buzz surrounding the much-anticipated bottling of Rahman’s distinctive sauces, The Burger Coach has swiftly become a local favorite, hosting everything from exciting birthday parties and intense youth competitions to exquisite weddings and cheerful neighborhood cookouts.
The Burger Coach stands out for its consistent dedication to giving back. A sizeable amount of the proceeds are used to support local and international organizations as well as youth sports projects. In addition to reaching out to conflict-affected regions in the Middle East and Europe, Rahman actively donates his time as a coach in rural villages in Bangladesh, Colombia, and Saudi Arabia. His ongoing support of neighborhood teams and tutoring of young athletes demonstrates his profound involvement in the DMV community.
Beyond his involvement with neighborhood girls’ basketball leagues, Rahman works with a variety of organizations, including the World Basketball Alliance, Bangladesh Empowered, The Growing Up Club, The Center for Non Violence (DMV), ICCP (Potomac), Desi Ballers (Bangladesh), and other basketball programs in Colombia.
His passion for cuisine and his long-standing goal of helping young people via athletics and community service are perfectly combined in this endeavor. You can find him on Instagram at @the.burger.coach to follow his journey and see his ongoing influence in the kitchen and on the court.
